Self/ Photo Diary

Photography is a powerful emotional tool, and every photograph we create is a reflection of our personal value system. If we connect with our motivations by using a camera in new and revealing ways, we find that why we take pictures can be more important than how.

Looking at current or past issues, we photograph personal materials in still lifes and portraits, to allow resolution of these aspects in our lives. In group discussion and pair work, photographing materials and each other during the workshop, we set agendas to develop into personal photo diaries.

Photo Diary

The main aim of this work is to focus energy, respect and attention on an area of emotional potency in our lives within a safe, respectful and supported environment, while retaining a perspective of separate observation as photographers.

The ability to bring emotional courage and literacy is helpful, and participants find results to the extent that they put energy in. Risk taking is encouraged, but safe levels of respect and personal boundaries are provided and expected. Each person is helped to begin a photo diary on their own subject, and a follow up class within two weeks allows us to compare our stories and show the results of using photography to look at our lives.

The workshop is an organic process, and may be a totally new way of working with photography for most people. With group building exercises, this workshop can be done with all kinds of people, and as well as connecting with important aspects of our personal lives, many have find value in the group dynamics.

Photo Diary

All participants are expected to have a working knowledge of their own camera that they bring (this is not a technical workshop). A leaflet on suggestions of materials to bring will be sent in advance. Please bring food to share for lunch.
